Ellicott Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing With 4 Perfect Mother’s Day Gifts for the Senior Mom

Mother’s Day is approaching, and this year figures to be a happier occasion for families than Mother’s Day 2020, when it wasn’t safe to gather, especially for senior mothers who were in the most vulnerable age group.

Now with a large percentage of seniors vaccinated and COVID-19 vaccinations available for all adults who want one, there are sure to be more in-person Mother’s Day celebrations this year, so come armed with the perfect gift.

Ellicott Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing has a look at fourSnow gifts for the senior mom that will be perfect to have her thinking about you long after the day has passed.

  1. PhotoStick Mobile

As time goes by, our phones are our photo albums. But one out of three smartphone users lose all their data—phones and everything—due to water damage alone. And some are faced with the difficult decision of having to delete photos to create room for more. This PhotoStick allows you to backup your memories for safekeeping.

  1. Soul Insoles

Foot pain is something we all deal with, especially as we get older. These insoles provide relief to not only your feet, but your legs as well by correcting your foot positioning. They are comfortable and can replace more expensive equipment and even visits to the podiatrist.

  1. Snow Teeth Whitening

If your mom enjoys a little pampering, get her this teeth-whitening system that is non-invasive and can yield results in less than 10 minutes per day. This will remove wine, coffee, smoking and other stains with serum and LED technology that’s cheaper than whitening strips or visits to the dentist.

  1. Transfer Old Digital Photos and Movies

Do you have stacks of photos and home movies on VHS, DVD, 8mm, and other formats that have been rendered unwatchable unless you have antiquated equipment? If so, iMemories is for you. They will send you a kit to ship your media in, and they’ll turn it into a digital format that can be enjoyed on the devices of today.

Protecting our patients, residents and staff from COVID-19

From the beginning of the coronavirus outbreak, our facility has followed the guidelines and recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH). The safety of our residents, patients, staff and their families are our priority and we continue to take an abundance of precaution to protect them.

Our team is well-trained in the importance of proper handwashing and the use of alcohol-based sanitizer, and all are supplied with proper PPE. If they experience symptoms—such as fever or cough—they are instructed to stay home, and they must be cleared before returning to work.

Handwashing and hygiene posters are displayed throughout our facilities, and employee education and training continue based on the latest community and CDC guidelines. In addition, the COVID-19 vaccine is currently being administered throughout the Centers Health Care facilities to staff and residents alike.

25 years of improving lives
25 years of compassionate care
25 years of making a difference

Experience matters and we have it.

We’re proud to be part of Centers Health Care, one of the leading post-acute care organizations in the country.

This year, Centers Health Care is celebrating 25 years of monumental care.

As the leading post-acute healthcare network in the Northeast, Centers’ experience is unmatched, our knowledge unparalleled. We bring more accumulated expertise to the residents and patients we serve than any other post-acute provider in the country, touching more than half a million lives and achieving more than 20,000 successful rehabilitations every year.

Our remarkable insights and ground-breaking achievements over the past quarter-century are exemplary.  We have developed programs that have put our company in the top 5% nationwide for successful rehabilitations such as our specialized care units, ranging from a cardiac care unit that has been certified by the American Heart Association to vent and dialysis care.

We have developed unprecedented outreach to the communities we serve—creating units dedicated to community cultures. Centers has, in short, transformed post-acute healthcare…and that’s just the beginning.

We celebrate as we look back at our successes and look forward to our continuing triumphs.

“Over the last quarter-century,” CEO Kenny Rozenberg says, “we have gained the kind of powerful experience in post-acute healthcare that is unmatched in the industry. I am proud and honored to celebrate the 25th anniversary—and look forward to moving ahead, as we write new chapters in the story of Centers Health Care, leading the way for the next 25 years.”

Ellicott Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing on Whether it Is a Good Idea to Get Life Insurance During the COVID-19 Pandemic

With the COVID-19 pandemic here for seemingly the long haul, one sector that has seen an increase in business is life insurance.

The MIB Life Index shows that applications in the United States were up 1.5% in the first half of 2020 compared to the same period of 2019, and applications from those under the age of 44 were up 3.4% in that period.

But is that a knee-jerk reaction? Ellicott Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing has a look at whether you need life insurance during the pandemic

Only Buy if You Need It

Experts say you should buy life insurance if you have a need for it even if we weren’t in the middle of the pandemic. In other words, don’t make COVID-19 your determining factor in buying. You should have a plan for the money that would be distributed in case of a tragedy. For example, paying off a mortgage or student loan, recently getting married, or having a child.

Know What Kind You Want

There’s a difference between term life insurance and permanent (universal) life insurance. Term will cover you for a specific period of time (20 or 30 years, for instance), and you are covered until the policy runs out. This is generally cheaper the younger you are.

Universal life insurance essentially creates a savings account that earns interest and/or dividends, you may be able to borrow against it, and it will be distributed upon your death. These policies guarantee money regardless of when you die, but they can be up to 10 times more expensive than term life insurance.

Only Buy What You Need

Most standard policies range from $250,000 to $1 million, but determine how much money you would need to cover what you want to be covered, and shop for that amount. Additionally, many employers offer basic life insurance (oftentimes, one year’s worth of salary is covered), and you can purchase more multiples of that with the cost being deducted from your paycheck.

The bottom line: don’t buy life insurance just because of the pandemic, but if you need it, now is as good of a time as ever to buy.

Ellicott Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing on the 10 Restaurants People are Most Loyal To

While Americans may not be dining out as often as they used to (or maybe just getting takeout or delivery from their favorite restaurants) during the COVID-19 pandemic, we all have our favorites that we turn to for celebrations, comfort food, or when we just don’t want to cook that night.

YouGov, an online research firm, tracked the most popular restaurants in the United States from August 2019 to August 2020, and the results are out. Ellicott Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing has the top 10 restaurants that Americans have a favorable view of.

  1. Denny’s

You can’t beat Denny’s for convenience, as “America’s Diner” is open around the clock and serves breakfast all day and all night long. It has a positivity rate of 57%.

  1. Texas Roadhouse

Also coming in at 57% is Texas Roadhouse. This chain is known for its steaks, ribs, and buttery rolls that lends a supporting “roll” in every entrée.

  1. Marie Callender’s

While there are several physical locations on the west coast, Marie Callender’s is more famous with diners due to their frozen meals, including the chicken pot pie.

  1. Red Lobster

Fifty-eight percent of people look favorably upon Red Lobster, America’s first seafood chain restaurant. In addition to fresh catches in plenty of locations far away from the sea, their cheddar biscuits are so famous that the chain released the recipe so fans can make them at home!

  1. Applebee’s

An Applebee’s is a staple of nearly every town in America, fitting their moniker of “Your Neighborhood Grill and Bar.” Survey participants loved their wide array of cuisines for lunch and dinner as well as happy hour specials.

  1. Cracker Barrel

Situated along many of America’s highways, Cracker Barrel got a favorable response from 60% of those surveyed. Along with a homecooked meal, the accompanying store got high marks, where you can shop for clothes, knick-knacks, and vintage sodas and candy brands.

  1. The Cheesecake Factory

It’s tough to save room for this restaurant’s namesake with their menu that features everything from pasta dishes and American fare to Chinese cuisine. But their cheesecakes hold up just fine in takeout containers to eat later!

  1. Olive Garden

In addition to Italian staples, fans of Olive Garden love the unlimited soup, salad, and breadsticks lunch option.

  1. Outback Steakhouse

This Bloomin’ Brand has a 63% loyalty rating due to its variety of steaks and—of course—the Bloomin’ Onion appetizer, which has spawned many imitators.

  1. IHOP

With Denny’s and Cracker Barrel in the top 10, America sure loves its breakfast places! The International House of Pancakes (now known simply as IHOP) finished in the top spot, with 66% of people having a positive view of the joint that serves more than pancakes—they have full breakfast, lunch, and dinner menus.

Centers Health Care is Stronger Together

This summer Centers Health Care is Stronger Together

A reflection of our unity, our strength and our ties to the communities we serve.

We are committed to providing an empowering circle of care. Top healthcare professionals in every field play a critical role in our mission to deliver a patient-centered life cycle that makes us all stronger. Our leadership, experience and expertise in post-acute healthcare all lead to successful outcomes.

Danny Prero, Administrator at Williamsbridge Center, describes how he experiences the circle at his facility: “I’m a firm believer in working hard, working together, and paying it forward. My mission is to guide my team toward a common goal and outcome—improving the lives of all those who come through our doors in need of our care. I inspire my team to achieve success, and they inspire me by their great work.”

This summer, as you get to know why we are stronger together, you will also have the opportunity to learn something…and win something, including a Roku TV, a trip for 2, and more. All you have to do is learn the facts: Did you know that Centers Health Care partners with over 2,000 hospitals and health providers, that the average therapy department at Centers has over 140 years of combined experience, and each year we achieve over 22,000 successful rehabilitation stays? There is real strength—and some pretty cool prizes—in those numbers!

We are also recognizing our healthcare hero partners at regional hospitals, serving up complimentary ice cream or donuts to the staff at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady, Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown, Saratoga Hospital in Saratoga Springs, Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx, and NYU Langone Hospital in Brooklyn to name just a few. Watch our donut extravaganza in action, courtesy of Centers Health Care.

The bottom line is: Centers Health Care is making a difference in people’s lives.

These are just three of the many examples from around Centers Health Care that remind us of the wonderful stories we can share because we are stronger together.

Last, but certainly not least, the campaign highlights inspiring true stories of patients and residents who have benefitted from the Centers Circle of Care, demonstrating the real-life power and success of the Stronger Together promise.

Extraordinary Individuals: #CentersHeroes

A message from CEO, Kenny Rozenberg, to #CentersHeroes:

Our thanks—and our hearts—go out to you.

I’ve never been more proud of—or awed by—the Centers Health Care teams across our network and throughout our facilities. At this critical time, in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, all of you—administrators, therapists, nurses and nurses aides, social workers, hospital liaisons, receptionists, recreational, food and cleaning staffs—have stood up and met the challenge head on. You are the best. You are the bravest. You are Centers Heroes!

 Watch our #CentersHeroes in action.

Every day, without fail, you demonstrate the courage to step up—and the commitment to safeguard the health and wellbeing of our patients, residents and your co-workers. The world is changing. You are not…because I’ve seen it with my own eyes: you have always been steadfast in your dedication and courage.

I want to highlight a #CentersHero, Shellan Robinson, LPN at Ellicott Center. “I love what I do. I can’t think of anything more rewarding than being a nurse: taking care of people in need, easing their pain, comforting and engaging them. In the last several months, with the arrival of COVID-19, we have experienced dramatic new challenges in our work. But one thing remains the same: I still love what I do.” Click here to read more

Shellan’s story is just one of many—stories of the unsung heroes throughout Centers Health Care. We honor you. We salute you. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts. You are our heroes.

Our partners at the Buffalo Sabres also recognize and salute our #CentersHeroes. Goaltender Carter Hutton, sends a shoutout to you all:

On behalf of the Sabres, I want to say thank you to our friends at Centers Health Care. You show up every single day to help prevent Covid-19. Your support is great for the community. Thanks for keeping us safe.”

I know this is not easy—for you or your families. The pandemic may in fact be the greatest challenge you ever face. But you have proven by your every day actions—by your commitment and your compassion—that you are up to the challenge.

I want to join the Sabres in thanking every #CentersHero…as well as all healthcare workers and first responders on the frontline of the COVID-19 pandemic.

#CentersHeroes : Meet Shellan Robinson, LPN, Ellicott Center

#CentersHeroes:

Introducing Centers Heroes, healthcare workers on the frontline of the fight against Covid-19. Every day, without fail, they demonstrate the courage to step up and the commitment to safeguard the health and wellbeing of our patients, Residents and their co-workers. The world is changing. They have not, remaining steadfast in their dedication. We honor them. We salute them. We thank them from the bottom of our hearts. They are our heroes.

Meet Shellan Robinson, LPN, Ellicott Center

I love what I do. I can’t think of anything more rewarding than being a nurse: taking care of people in need, easing their pain, comforting and engaging them. In the last several months, with the arrival of COVID-19, we have experienced dramatic new challenges in our work. But one thing remains the same: I still love what I do.

I became a nurse because of my mother. I came to the United States from Jamaica with my brother and my mom when I was 16 years old, and went to Buffalo State College for my degree in social work. I enjoyed giving back to the community, but then my mother got sick. Spending time at the hospital, I saw that it was the nurses who cared for her 24/7. They literally nursed her back to health. I decided: That’s what I want to do.

I have been a nurse for eight years, and the challenges we face now at Ellicott Center are unlike anything I’ve experienced. I live with my husband and six-year-old daughter. As the schools are closed, many of us at the Center have had to make arrangements for childcare. I’m proud to say that we have all found relatives to care for our kids—my mother takes care of my daughter—and that no one on my unit has missed a single shift. We are living the new normal, adapting and adopting to the pandemic.

First thing when I arrive at the Center, I meet with the staff to set priorities and to address any health issues that may have arisen. Then I check in with the Residents, see what their needs are, and get them ready for breakfast and the rest of the day.

We practice social distancing at Ellicott Center, meaning that we rotate the Residents into the dining room, making sure that they are always at least six feet apart. As nurses, however, our work is hands-on; but we are equipped with all the necessary protective gear—masks, gloves and gowns—to ensure that we safeguard the health of the staff and Residents alike.

Social distancing is difficult for the Residents. Many don’t understand why they can’t join their friends in activities or have visits from family. We do everything we can to comfort them, engage them, and make them happy. We bring games to their rooms, tune the TV to their favorite channels, and help them arrange video calls with family. I also love listening to their stories—they bring so much to the table.

I empathize with every Resident. I feel their pain and share their joy. I bring a little sunshine into their lives—and they bring some into mine.

It is a daunting and exhausting experience. COVID-19 creates not only a physical burden, but an emotional one as well. Sometimes, when I get home, I break down and cry. But I always look forward to getting up the next morning and going back to see the Residents. I love them, I love what I do, and I know that we’re in this together.
